Lyrics: Dana Al Fardan Music: Dana Al Fardan/Nadim Naaman/Dana Al Fardan and Nadim Naaman Who’s this creature he seeks? He’s a mad man What’s he done come to lead him astray? How they linger alone, all the time, out of sight He neglects us in favor of Shams What can he teach him that he doesn’t know yet? What does he give him that we can’t provide? Day and night, they retreat when the world’s at his feet And he’s losing his mind in his prime He’s dazed and he burns His howling echoes through these streets His mind has been turned By one who sets out to deceive He has taken leave of his senses Where’s Mawlānā absorbed the divine? Now he twirls without end in a frenzied decent From the pulpit that he occupied He is enveloped in the flames of Shams’ sorcery. Who will rid us of this menace? What can they possibly discuss all day and all night? Sheikh Shams teaches us, “How we see God is a direct reflection of how we see ourselves”. So, look at you, full of envy and anger, spreading offensive lies and rumors about these holy men. Are you not ashamed? The whole universe is contained within every human being. Everything that we see, including things that we despise or abhor, is present within us. The devil is not and extraordinary force that attacks from the outside, it is an ordinary voice within. If you regret listening to him, that is the way into repentance; you are on the right path Their spirits reside In places that may not be reached Their souls have taken flight Towards a realm that can’t be breached There is honor inside his confinement My father, he aches for the light In his practice of Sama His whole revolves From his love that brightens the sky Who’s this creature he seeks? He’s a mad man What’s he done come to lead him astray? How they linger alone, all the time, out of sight He neglects us in favor of Shams What can he teach him that he doesn’t know yet? What does he give him that we can’t provide? Day and night, they retreat when the world’s at his feet And he’s losing his mind in his prime My friends, go home and rest. It is late Please, father, let us sit and talk, together, all of us There will be plenty to discuss, but not yet. Good night Your friends grow restless, father I know Don’t forget them Forget them? On the contrary, soon I will share secrets with them that we never dreamed of discovering Shams is the sun, he is knowledge I’m immersed in the light of his mind He recognizes in me all that I hope to be For that freedom, I’d give him my life For my truth I will sacrifice
