“Daddy daddy daddy please, help me daddy, tell me this. I want to know so much but the top of my list, is why is the world the way it is?”
I had a dream last night, knocked me down like a skittle; dreamy my sweet little boy was a little less little. He looked me square in the eye and he asked me this, he said “Why is the world the way it is?”
I said “Son that’s some philosophical shtick. It’s a big one son, I can’t answer it. That’s quite a question, don’t you have another. Tell you what go ask your mother!”
And he said:
“Daddy daddy daddy please, help me daddy, tell me this. I want to know so much but the top of my list, is why is the world the way it is?”
Well my dream moved on and so did my son until his infant years had been and gone. When the army started to enlist my son stood up and he balled his fists. He said “Daddy I’m a’gonna go and fight; gonna save the world, gonna do what’s right and you and mamma I shall miss, but I’ll be home soon, you can bank on this.”
And he said:
“Daddy daddy daddy please, help me daddy, tell me this. I want to know so much but the top of my list, is why is the world the way it is?”
Well the years they came and passed us by and mamma aged before my eyes. Her dreams would make her writhe and twist and she’d cry for her baby’s gentle kiss.
And the years carried on and Ma seemed better, till the day that Corporal brought that letter. It read “Ma and Pa if I had one wish it would be that I didn’t have to tell you this. Your son was loyal and son was brave but your son was done, he could not be saved. That bullet ripped your son in twain and we never shall forget his name”.
And mamma cried and so did I and we fell in the dirt and we asked God “Why? What kind of wicked trick is this? Why is the world the way it is?”
And we said:
“Daddy daddy daddy please, help me daddy, tell me this. I want to know so much but the top of my list, is why is the world the way it is?”
