Soliloquy (from TANZ DER VAMPIRE) (English Version of 'Die unstillbare Gier')

Lyrics: Michael Kunze Music: Jim Steinman Well alright, no stars tonight The moon must hide, can't bear to see my face So many moons have passed So many Suns gone down Too much blood under the bridge Too many worlds turned upside down The weed was golden and the fields were green In the summer 1617, the first time I ever drew blood She was such a beautiful and innocent child She never knew my soul was cursed for good I fought to overcome my thirst I thought I could But when I kissed her lips, it came over me The beast in me ran wild As always, when I tried to get it on, I killed that which I yearned I want to be a flame and turn to ashes, but I have never burned I want to fly up high and higher, but I sink deep and deeper instead I want to be an angel or the devil himself, but I am nothing but a creature longing for the things I never can have For the sake of satisfaction, I will suffer all torments But our longings are delusive The hunger never ends When the world has drawn its final breath, and extinguished all the light, there'll be nothing left but a lifeless wasteland, and an endless appetite Nothing left but a soundless heartbeat, and a ruthless appetite The preacher's daughter let me in her room
With her own blood, I wrote a poem of love upon her ivory skin And the bashful page of Napoleon the great
When I recall his candour, I can't help thinking To kill him was a sin Each time I grasp for life, it slips away My vigor is a sham I want to grasp the world with all its mysteries But I don't know who I am I long to fly in total freedom, and yet my chains keep dragging me down but I am nothing but a creature full of lies and doubts And must it drown whoever I love? The split goes through my very soul It's a wound that never mends No escape and no redemption The hunger never ends There are those who believe in science, and those who believe in art There are those who believe in power and wealth, or love and matters of the heart There are those who believe in various gods in nations,in knowledge, in hell and in heaven, in sins and in virtues, I want to be a fallen or an absolute saint, and the choice of wrong and right, But I know there is no other God but the ever inescapable, immoral, indestructible and all consuming Appetite A prediction that I will now make I'm sure I will be right When the next millennium finally comes, the god most worshiped in this world will be the God of Appetite
